Early and open sharing of research data is one of the key Open Science practices that still needs to be improved in our labs. Among the various enabling tools, electronic laboratory notebooks (ELNs) – designed to replace commonly used paper notebooks – offer notable benefits to users, from supporting collaboration amongst researchers, simplifying secured copying of data or time stamping to directly incorporating of instrument parameters. However, there are a multitude of ELN products on the market [Nature Protocols 17, 179 (2022)] and identifying the most appropriate and user-friendly one may be complex and time-consuming.
This Laserlab-Europe online workshop will present user experience (pros and cons) on some of the most popular ELNs (e.g. eLabFTW or Labfolder) as well as national initiatives on related topics such as metadata. Discussions will allow exchanging on pros and cons of ELNs and on how to motivate ourselves to switch from paper to an ELN.
