2025 Call

Call for proposals for joint experiments for standard procedures and instrument calibration

Lasers4EU invites all members of Lasers4EU and Laserlab-Europe AISBL to submit proposals for joint experiments for standard procedures and instrument calibration, an activity organised under the work package 4 “Cross-facility services”. All participants of Lasers4EU, as well as partners affiliated with Laserlab-Europe AISBL and ELI ERIC, are eligible to apply.

Objectives:

  1. implement standard procedures and instrument calibration during similar experiments conducted in a set of different labs;
  2. enable comparative analysis of results obtained across facilities;
  3. test and provide feedback on the Lasers4EU Data Management Plan for user experiments (template will be provided at a later stage)

    Implementation:

    • Joint experiments should normally not exceed 3 weeks.
    • Accepted experiments must be conducted within 6 months of the approval date.
    • Financial support covers travel and subsistence (T&S) expenses for visiting scientists; access is provided free of charge by the host facility. Maximum T&S reimbursement for any project is limited to 5.000 €. Proposals should include a cost estimate.
    • A brief report must be submitted after the experiment to the Coordinator’s office. The report form is available here.
    • Publications resulting from joint experiments for standard procedures and instrument calibration have to be published in open access literature.
    • The proposal template is available here.
    • Proposals should be submitted to the Lasers4EU Activity Board via email at calls@lasers4.eu.
    • Deadline for applications: 16 June 2025

    Evaluation criteria:

    Proposals will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

    • Scientific Relevance – Alignment with standardisation, calibration, and data management objectives.
    • Feasibility – Clear methodology, realistic timeline, and appropriate resource planning.
    • Comparability – Design enables meaningful cross-facility result comparisons.
    • Contribution to Standardisation – Supports development or validation of common procedures.
    • Data Management – Application of and feedback on the Lasers4EU Data Management Plan for users experiments (template will be provided at a later stage).

    General guidelines:

    Please, note that there are two types of Joint experiments:

    • Joint experiments for standard procedures and instrument calibration, as addressed by the present call, are targeting the implementation of standard procedures and instrument calibration during similar experiments conducted in a set of different labs.
    • Curiosity-driven joint experiments between Lasers4EU partners have a clear scientific mission and possibly lead to publications. Proposals for such experiments can be submitted at any time and should follow the usual access proposal procedure through the proposal management system. In the application form “Joint Experiment” should be marked.
